Some friendly competition on the National Mall

C.U. Next. Thursday, a kickball team competing in the Thursday night social sports leagues, contends with rivals weekly both on the field and at the local bar. A couple hours of sweaty kickball and a few brewskis later, they head over to The Exchange, a nearby saloon on G street, and join their fellow kickball teams in beer pong and flip cup tournaments.

How do millennials meet new people in D.C.? Check out United Social Sports. Madeline Lee told The Spinoff she did just that when she moved from San Diego in the summer of 2015. She has been playing (and partying) with them ever since.

“I moved to DC not knowing anyone and wanted any excuse to do something outdoorsy and fun,” Madeline told us, “so when some coworkers asked me to join their team, I happily accepted.” Sixty bucks later and she was out on the national mall wearing a purple pinnie, beer in hand.

There are over fifteen sports leagues run by United Social Sports, organized by the sport, which day they play, and the location at which they play at. (For example Madeline’s league last summer was Kickball/Thursday/Vietnam Memorial). Each area then has a different “sponsor bar”.

“Our league’s sponsor bar is The Exchange, which everyone knows is the best bar to go to on kickball Thursdays. It’s normal for everyone to go straight there after in full kickball team attire,” says Madeline. The Exchange is known for their cheap pitchers of bud light and the flip cup tables they set up out front for the competitors.

So how do you join? Here we’ve broken it down for you..

There are three ways to register: as an individual, as a group, or as a team.

Visit United Social Sports’ website. There you can filter through over fifteen sport options of interest. They have everything from flag football to shuffleboard.

Once you’ve picked your sport, filter through all of the league options available. Each league will include what day it is played on, how much it is to join, and how many people play on each team.

Once you find a sport and league that fits in your schedule, registration is easy. If you’re a group, they will simply merge you with other groups and individuals registered. Finish your registration, hit the liquor store down the street for a 12 rack, and get to the mall to meet some new buds!
